Sleep Apnea is a serious medical condition that can deprive you of sleep and you may not even know about it. It is also linked to serious diseases such as heart diseases, stroke, high blood pressure, and other coronary diseases.
You may ask how sleep apnea deprives you the sleep you need. Sleep apnea is a condition where you will stop breathing for as short as 10 seconds to as long as a minute. This in turn will wake you up from deep sleep in order to shift your body to allow breathing.
You may not know about it, but your sleeping partner will witness these episodes. Sleep apnea is a condition where something will be blocking your trachea or your windpipe. This may be your tongue, your tonsils, your uvula or fatty tissues in your throat or relaxed throat muscles.
To treat sleep apnea, your doctor will recommend you to stop drinking alcohol, smoke, and taking sleep medicines. All these things relax your throat muscles that can cause obstruction in breathing. Your doctor may also advice you to lose weight if you are overweight and sleep on your side instead flat on your back.
There are also dental devices that open your airway to improve breathing. Or, for a more permanent treatment, you can try and get a surgery for sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea may have changed your life socially and changed your health. However, you will notice that your condition will improve once sleep apnea has been detected and treated.
